Energy Efficiency Policy

San Francisco's 2011 Existing Commercial Buildings Energy Performance Ordinance requires buildings over 10,000 sq ft to track and report energy use annually, and to complete an energy efficiency audit every five years.

Green Building Policy

In 2004, municipal projects (new, existing, or leasehold improvements) greater than 5,000 sq ft were required to be LEED Silver certified (updated to Gold in 2011.) To engage the private sector, in 2006 the San Francisco Planning and Building departments initiated priority permitting for new and renovated buildings that achieve LEED Gold certification or higher. The 2008 Green Building Ordinance requires LEED Gold for new commercial buildings >25,000 sq ft, and GreenPoint Rated for new homes.

Zero Waste Policy

To achieve the goal of zero waste by 2020, San Francisco requires recycling and composting for all facilities. We work hard to encourage companies to take responsibility for their products. We offer tools to help the rest of us avoid unwanted junk in the first place, so we don't have to get rid of it later.

Climate Policy

The City and County of San Francisco is on track for the goal of a 20% reduction in communitywide greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 by 2012. Additional goals are 40% reduction by 2025, and 80% by 2050.
